Happy Father's Day

Father's Day

There are plenty of great Father's Day gift ideas at Yamagami's Nursery, even if dad is not a gardener.

If he has any outdoor interests, Sunday Afternoon Hats are appreciated and welcome relief from the summer sun.

Check out our new line of artisanal mustards from My Kind Of Mustard, based in San Jose. We offer 4 flavors including Beer, Horseradish, Three Pepper, and Curry. Oh so tasty and perfect for grilled sausages or burgers! How about a gift of all four!

Dad's not a grill master? How about a travel mug for his coffee on-the-go? Find a little something special for Dad at Yamagami's Nursery.

A Passion for Passionfruit!

At last we have received some fruiting passionflower vines! 'Frederick' is a vigorous vine that produces frilly flowers and sweet, fragrant, purple fruit. It is self-pollinating and a prolific bearer. Plant it on a south or west-facing wall for optimum heat and frost protection. Prune it hard in early spring to keep its size under control.

One wonderful thing about passionfruit is that they are self-harvesting! They drop off the vine when ripe, so all you need to do is pick them up. If you allow them to get slightly wrinkly, they get even sweeter.

Add a taste of the tropics to your garden with passionfruit!

Crocosmias:
Hummingbird Magnets!

Plant a treat for your hummingbirds and you. Crocosmias are old-fashioned garden plants related to gladiolas. They offer bright flowers on arching stems held above grassy foliage. They love the summer sun and will bloom profusely to prove it! Choose from oranges, reds and yellows for a brilliant display. They are easy to grow--and come back every year even fuller than the previous year. They grow 2' to 3' tall and wide. We currently offer the following varieties:

Crocosmia 'Emberglow'

Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie'

Crocosmia 'George Davidson'

Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

If you currently do not have hummingbirds, planting Crocosmias is a great way to attract them. Combine them with other plants that bloom in different seasons for a well-stocked hummingbird buffet!

New Veggie Treats!

Ruben Nunez, our vegetable buyer, continues to find exciting choices for your veggie garden. It's not too late to plant, as most summer veggies will bear well into the fall. Here are a few taste treats currently in stock:

'Purple Serrano' Pepper is beautiful in the garden and on the plate.

Some say it is milder than its green counterpart, but even more flavorful. It's also stunning in a container.

'Biscayne' Pepper is a Cubanelle pepper typically served fried or stuffed.

It is a sweet, pale green pepper with thick walls and a great flavor.

'Mandurian Round' Cucumber is a real treat! It's crisp and sweet.

Pick it at baseball size and there's no need to peel. It's just the right size for 1 or 2 people.

Here's a cool appetizer idea: First cut a small slice from the top and bottom, so that each half will stand straight. Then cut the cucumber in half, scoop out the seeds and stuff with shrimp salad, avocado or hummus. Yum!

These are just a few of the many veggie treasures in stock. Come by and browse through all the wonderful choices!

Fresh Herb Turkey Burgers

What You'll Need:

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 medium onion (diced small)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons ginger (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons tamari
  • salt and pepper
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground turkey
  • 1 large egg white (lightly beaten)
  • 2 scallions (minced)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons mint (rolled and snipped)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons basil (rolled and snipped)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons cilantro (rolled and snipped)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons parsley (rolled and snipped)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut or grapeseed oil
  • 6 burger buns
  • Burger condiments, tomatoes, lettuce

Step by Step:

  • Heat sesame oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté onion until translucent, about 4 minutes.
  • Add garlic, ginger and tamari and cook until vegetables are soft and fragrant.
  • Season with salt and pepper, transfer to a medium bowl, and wipe out skillet.
  • Add ground turkey, beaten egg white, scallions and fresh herbs to bowl with sautéed ingredients.
  • Using hands, mix gently to combine. Press mixture into patties, adding breadcrumbs as needed if too wet.
  • (If freezing, transfer patties to a storage container and lay them in rows separated with parchment or wax paper).
  • Heat coconut or grapeseed oil in skillet over medium heat OR fire up grill to medium flame.
  • Cook patties for about four minutes on each side, turning only once, until fully cooked through. Resist the temptation to press on them with your spatula!
  • Assemble burgers with fresh, nutritious toppings and enjoy.
