Tree Peonies Have Arrived!

Garden glamor queens, tree peonies, have arrived as 2 year-old grafted plants. These beauties are truly queenly, with their ferny foliage and brilliant, dramatic blossoms.

We have only a limited quantity, so come in soon! Pictured are three out of the nine varieties currently in stock.

Tree peonies grow four to five feet tall and wide in about ten years, so don't let their name fool you. They are NOT trees. They grow best with mostly sun, but appreciate some filtered shade during the hottest part of the day.

There is an amazing collection of fifty year+ beauties grown in a private garden in San Jose.

Those that are planted at the edge of the canopy of a deciduous tree seem to be the happiest. It is their ideal location, as they love the full sun in winter and lightly filtered sun while in bloom. They can be grown in a container, but it should be a deep one.

Come in right away for best selection of these dormant beauties (located in our bulb section).

While you are here, be sure to look over our Dahlias, Begonias and other summer-blooming bulbs. Let our friendly Nursery Pros help you create the garden you've always wanted.

Poppies from Annie's Annuals

Plant poppies now for a spectacular late spring display! Annie's Annuals offers an amazing array of varieties, including single forms as well as double forms. Unlike California poppies, these prefer a well-amended, soil so we recommend mixing G & B Harvest Supreme into your garden soil before planting. Like California Poppies, they prefer sun and will reseed for years of enjoyment. Most of the following varieties will grow 30" to 40" tall.

'Danebrog' Poppy is an amazing bright red and white, single, fringed poppy. With 4-5" blooms, it screams SPRING in the garden.

'Danebrog'

'Drama Queen' Poppy could not be better named. It offers large, frilly, single, ruby and deep purple flowers, which are easily 4" to 5" across. Wow!

'Drama Queen'

'Black Swan' Poppy is a wonder to behold! It has huge, feathery, fringed flowers of deepest purple. Its flowers are so large, they should be staked for support. It is likely to reseed.

'Black Swan'

'Falling in Love' is a new strain of field poppy (P. rhoeas) featuring semi-double and double blossoms in Valentine colors of pinks, reds, whites and even some peachy shades. Deadhead frequently for a long season of bloom. More compact than the others, these top out at 30" tall.

'Falling in Love'

'Sugar Plum' Poppy has frilly, fringed flowers of dark lavender with darker centers. The flowers have a lovely cupped shape and show off their color and form waving above silvery-grey foliage.

'Sugar Plum'

These poppies are just a sampling of the garden treasures available from Annie's Annuals and Yamagami's Nursery. Come see our ever-expanding selection and treat yourself to something extraordinary!

New Organic Gardening Helpers!

As spring approaches, snails and slugs become fruitful and multiply rapidly. The tender new growth of spring is their favorite feast. Snail & Slug Away is a spray that repels these marauders. It is plant-based, containing cinnamon oil (snail kryptonite) in a base of soapbark, soybean oil, and safflower oil.

It's safe for pets and children and all the ingredients are organic. Just spritz it on the plants you wish to protect! By limiting meals for snails and slugs, you limit their population.

We are excited to offer a new line of organic fertilizers in liquid form from Gardner & Bloome. They are made with fish and kelp for nutrients, and contain molasses to stimulate microbial life in the soil.

We offer three formulations: All Purpose for any plant, High Bloome for bountiful blossoms, and High Growth for fast, lush foliage. They can be used as a soil drench, for hydroponics, and as a foliar spray.

Ruben's Garden Pick:
Moldavian Balm

Moldavian Balm is also known as "Dragonhead Flower" for its showy purple flower spikes. It is a Eurasian plant grown for centuries for tea and its lovely flowers.

The tea is said to have medicinal qualities and a lemony-minty flavor. Some people are now also growing it for their bees and other pollinators that love its flowers.

It's really lovely to scatter through your vegetable garden and gain bigger harvests; go bees go!

Warm Mushroom Salad

What You'll Need:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped (optional)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar salt and pepper to taste
  • 10 ounces of baby greens (lettuce, spinach, etc.) or if you don't grow your own - use a 10 oz. package of mixed baby greens.

Step by Step:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add mushrooms and (optional) garlic, and cook; stirring until soft.
  • Continue cooking until the juices from the mushrooms have reduced to about 2 tablespoons.
  • Stir in the remaining olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper until evenly blended.
  • Turn off heat, and let the mushrooms sit in the pan until they are just warm, but no longer hot, otherwise the greens will wilt too much.
  • Put the baby greens into a serving bowl, and pour the warm mushroom mixture over them.
  • Toss to blend, and serve immediately.
