Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day is upon us once again, and so is the scramble to find something she would love to have but may not get for herself.

For the gardening mom, we offer many choices of flowers, plants, gardening tools, and even supplies. We had a customer once, who had compost delivered to his mom's house, where he used it to mulch her garden beds. She loved it!

It may seem like more of a challenge for the non-gardening mom, but Yamagami's is up to that challenge. Consider one of our kits. We offer kits to make candles, soaps, and air plant terrariums.

Air Plants (Tillandsias) don't need soil and will grow and bloom with an absolute minimum of care. They will even grow in windows of a hospital room. They come in many shapes and sizes.

Sunday Afternoon Hats are great protection from the sun. They shade your eyes and your neck and make dermatologists happy. Yes, they can be worn gardening but, since they are packable, are also great for traveling, attending games, and any other outdoor activity.

Flying Bird Teas and Cacao make thoughtful and refreshing gifts. Flying Bird Botanicals is a small, family-owned business from the Pacific Northwest, producing organic, handcrafted teas and cacao blends from local and fair trade ingredients. The teas are delicious hot or iced, and the cacaos are a real treat for chocolate lovers.

What most moms appreciate the most is a gift of your time. Bring her in to enjoy our garden and let her discover something irresistible herself. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms!

Water-Wise Plant Of The Week:
California Fuchsia

California Fuchsia (Epilobium or Zauschneria) is a delightful California Native plant adored by hummingbirds. They earn their name with brilliant red, tubular flowers in summer and fall. Their flaming flowers are set off by silvery or ferny green foliage.

Once they are established, they need little summer watering; truly water-wise color! California Fuchsias lose their leaves in winter and travel by underground stems, so they are quite frost hardy and amazingly sturdy. Plant them in full sun to part shade. Currently we are offering the following four varieties, ranging in height from 6" to 5':

El Tigre and Catalina
Silver Select and Cloverdale

It's May, It's May
The Merry Month Of Mulch!

Mulch Everything Special! For the mulching month of May, we are offering buy 3, get one free on all-organic G & B Soil Building Conditioner!

A 3" layer of mulch can reduce watering needs by 30%. Digging it into the soil also helps. Digging in a 3 cu. ft. bale 12" deep adds 5% organic material to a 30 sq ft (5' x 6') area. This can reduce watering by 20%. It also contains beneficial microbes for soil and root health.

Be Water-Wise and save! Pick yours up today or have it delivered.

Guac This Way....

Guac this way for a fresh shipment of Avocado trees! We're excited to offer 'Sir Prize'. It's Hass-like but more cold hardy, more compact, earlier, and tastier!

Other exciting arrivals include 'Holiday', a dwarf Hass-type and 15 gallon size 'Jim Bacon', a tasty and fairly cold-hardy variety, with excellent flavor. See our Avocado Guide for more info on varieties and our Citrus and Avocado Planting Guide for planting instructions.

Ruben's Heat-Loving Garden Picks

Mountain Spinach (Orach) is a wonderfully showy edible for the heat of summer.

It is similar in flavor to spinach but is much more heat-tolerant. The plant can grow 4' to 6' tall but the best eating is the foliage of the lower 18". Once it grows too much taller, it's time for flower stalks to appear.

The stalks are becoming popular in the cut flower market and also appeal to bees and other pollinators.

We offer 2 varieties, 'Magenta Magic' and 'Golden'.

Try mixing them in a border to shade more heat-sensitive greens and enjoy colorful and tasty salads - then later, bouquets.

'Magenta Magic' Orach

'Golden' Orach

Endurascape Verbenas are new hybrids that are more heat tolerant and more cold-tolerant than their parents.

Not only will they sail through our summers and winters, they are also resistant to pesky powdery mildew.

Add the fact that they are prolific rebloomers, and yes folks, we have winners!

We currently offer two Endurascape varieties, Hot Pink and Purple.

They grow 6" to 10" tall and 2' to 3' wide.

That's a lot of color and coverage from a single plant. They are fairly low water users too!

Purple Endurascape Verbena
