Loquats, At Long Last!

It's been over a year since we've been able to find any loquats, so we're thrilled to bring in three tasty golden varieties! Loquats are fast growing, evergreen, large shrubs or small trees. They are prized for their yummy fruit, their large tropical-looking foliage, their pretty flowers and their trainability.

They can grow to 20 feet+ tall, but are easily kept to 10 feet or so. They can be trained flat (espaliered), left as a multi-trunk, or trained as a single trunk shade tree. They are quite showy, with whitish flowers in fall. These three varieties are all self-fertile. They are remarkably hardy for a sub-tropical plant. The tree itself is hardy to about 20°F, the fruit is damaged at about 25°F.

'Big Jim' has large, oblong fruit with a pale orange skin and orangey-yellow flesh. It is very sweet, with a hint of acid to give it excellent flavor. Mid-season ripening (March – April).

'Gold Nugget' is the standard for golden loquats. Its fruit is golden on the outside with orange flesh. It is firm, sweet, juicy, and meaty, with a thin skin. April ripening.

'McBeth' has very large, teardrop fruit with yellow skin and flesh. The fruit is firm, juicy, and creamy, with only 1 or 2 seeds. Late season ripening (April – May).

We will not get another shipment for a year, so come in soon!


 

Fall Is For Planting...
Water-Wise!

This is the time of year for new plantings or revamping old, tired plantings. Fall is when soil temperatures favor quick root growth and the air temperatures promote maintaining sturdy top growth. Time to plant water-wise! Brown is NOT the new green; smart green is the new green. Remove dead or brown lawns and gardens and replace with water-wise plants. The Santa Clara Valley Water District offers a rebate program as an incentive. Don't know where to begin?


'Diamond Heights' Ceanothus

Join us at 10 AM on Saturday, September 19th for The Water-Wise Landscape Class with Plantsman, Mike Craib. We will have many of the plants from the SCVWD approved list on display and Mike will discuss how to combine them to create an attractive landscape of drought tolerant plants from groundcovers to trees. These plants will have all fall and winter to get their roots established so they can face next summer with a minimum of stress. By grouping plants of similar water needs together, your irrigation needs will be simpler. Class is free, get here early for a seat.


Manzanita 'Emerald Carpet' (Arctostaphylos)

Water-wise plants can be modern and angular or fluffy and soft. They can have striking single flower stalks or masses of flowers. You will likely be surprised by the diversity of the possibilities. After his talk, Mike will guide participants through our natives section and other water-wise choices. A representative from the Santa Clara Valley Water District will be here to answer questions about the homeowner programs they offer, including landscape rebates. Don't miss this one!

Pollinator Plants from
Annie's Annuals

A fresh shipment from Annie's Annuals always contains some garden treasure. This week's shipment includes some pollinator favorites.

Asarina 'Joan Lorraine' is a fast growing perennial vine from Mexico, offering velvety purple trumpet flowers summer into fall. It's irresistible to hummingbirds. It's vigorous and can grow to 6' to 10' tall.

Use it on an arbor or trellis for maximum show. You can even grow it in hanging baskets or window boxes to spill over.

When it goes dormant, you can cut it way back. It will leap forth again in spring. Plant it in morning sun with afternoon shade or bright shade all day.

Sacred Flowers Of The Andes (Cantua buxifolia) is an evergreen, "viney" shrub bearing clusters of 3" long magenta trumpet flowers off and on all year.

It grows to about 6' tall and wide, but can be kept smaller with pruning. Try growing it on an espalier (trellis) for a bright wall of color.

Plant it in mostly sun to part shade. It's hardy to 20°F. It's a feast for hummingbirds!

Cuphea 'Minnie Mouse' has bright coral-red tubular flowers with two dark purple petals sticking out making the mouse ears. The wispy stamens make the whiskers for cute little mouse faces.

They are a great source of nectar and are beloved by hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees.

They are a perennials/shrub growing 2' to 3' tall and wide. Thrives in containers. Plant it in morning sun with afternoon shade or bright shade all day.

Tecomaria 'Hammer's Rose' has clusters of creamy apricot-rose trumpet flowers summer through winter.

Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators love these flowers.

It is an evergreen shrubby vine easily kept 4' to 6' tall as a shrub, but up to 15' tall if supported a vine. It is very heat tolerant, drought tolerant, tolerant of most soils and deer-resistant.

These are just a few of the treasures that have arrived.

New Taste Treats:
Kalettes!

Kalettes are a brand new vegetable, a cross between kale and Brussels sprouts. (They are an old-fashioned hybrid, not a GMO.) They offer a sweet and nutty flavor, the best of both parents.

They grow like a Brussels sprouts plant but, instead of what looks like little cabbages on a tall stalk, they look like kale rosettes on a stalk.

They were developed to give kale more versatility in the kitchen. Kalettes can be eaten raw or cooked. Try roasting, grilling, stir-frying, sautéing, or steaming them.

The Kaleetes do not form until the stalks are quite tall, so it's fun to watch them grow then suddenly "bloom" rosettes.

Try some in your fall garden and spring cuisine!

Warm Shrimp Salad with Ginger and Tarragon Dressing

An unusual and extravagant-tasting first course salad. Stir-fried shrimp contrasts with crispy greens and colorful peppers tossed with a tarragon and ginger infused dressing.

Ingredients:

Dressing:
2 cloves garlic
2 shallots or 3 scallions, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh tarragon
2 tablespoons chopped fresh ginger
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper or to taste

Salad:
12 ounces medium raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 heads of lettuce, one green-leaf and one red-leaf, torn into bite-sized pieces
1 bunch of arugula

Garnish:
1/2 each, red and yellow bell peppers, sliced into thin strips

Instructions:

• In a blender or food processor, make the dressing by combining the garlic, scallions, tarragon, ginger, lime juice, vinegar, soy sauce, olive oil, sesame oil and pepper. Mix until well blended.
• Marinate the shrimp in 3 tablespoons of dressing for 30 minutes, reserving the remaining dressing. Drain shrimp and discard marinade.
• In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the reserved dressing. Add the shrimp and stir-fry quickly 1 to 2 minutes or until the shrimp is pink throughout.
• Arrange the lettuces and arugula in large salad bowl and scatter the hot shrimp on top. Garnish with the bell pepper strips.
• Pour the remaining dressing over the salad. Toss well and serve.
Serves 4 to 6
