Butterfly Bushes
(Buddlejas)

With colorful plumes of flowers waving over the plants, butterfly bushes are festive additions to any size garden. They are found in purple, lavender, blue, rose, wine, and white. They get their name because they are magnets for nectar-loving butterflies (and hummingbirds). From tall varieties (up to 9 feet tall) to compact ones (2 to 4 feet tall), there is a butterfly bush for every garden.

They are frost-hardy, drought-hardy and tolerant of morning sun to full sun. They grow well in containers too!

Many newer hybrid varieties have been developed to be longer blooming and showier than the older varieties. Proven Winners has introduced several superior varieties.

We offer the compact Lo and Behold varieties: Blue Chip and Purple Haze. Both grow 2 to 4 feet tall and bloom all summer-long. They are from the Proven Winners collection.

Miss Ruby (4 to 6 feet tall) and Miss Violet (4 to 5 feet tall) are taller varieties with longer flower spikes. They are also from the Proven Winners collection.

Ruben's Veggie Picks

Here are some veggies Ruben recommends trying in your garden this year:

Mandurian Round Cucumbers are amazingly sweet and crunchy. Even their skin is sweet! They do have fuzz on their skin but it washes off easily, so no peeling is required. They are best when harvested at the size of a baseball. Although their flavor is cucumber all the way, Mandurians are technically more closely related to melons (which accounts for their sweetness).

Thai Tiger Eggplant is a small round eggplant often found in Thai gardens and cuisine. It is striped on its shoulder, hence its name. It has a sweet, mild, and delicate flavor and a tender skin.

Jambalaya Okra is better adapted to our climate than other traditionally southern varieties of okra. It bears early and heavily. Fruit has thick, succulent, meaty pods and a delicious flavor.

Summer Lawn Care

Summertime means maintaining your lawn's comfort by following a few guidelines regarding the heat. It's time to let your lawn get a little taller to protect its roots from the intense sun. Set your mower height at 2.5" to 3" for a bluegrass/ryegrass blend or at 2" for tall fescue. Mow when the grass is only 1/3 taller than you want it. (If someone else mows for you, ask them to clean their mower blades to stop the spread of weed seeds from other yards.)

Lawn watering can be puzzling. It is not the case where more is better. You will need to know how much and how evenly your watering system is applying water. We offer a FREE Lawn Watering Guide that can help you make that determination. It has a chart that shows how long to run your system every three days. If you are currently watering more often than that, you should gradually adapt your lawn to less frequent watering.

Your lawn needs to be fed to maintain its lush, green appearance without forcing it into fast, soft growth that will require extra water and be more susceptible to disease. We recommend Gardner & Bloome Organics Lawn Fertilizer 8-1-1 as the perfect feed. It contains beneficial microbes to boost the root system's efficiency and to help the grass resist diseases.
