Special Order Fruit Trees (SOFT)
To Arrive Bareroot In January!

Time to special order bareroot fruit trees! We have until November 1st to place your orders. Normally we have to order in groups of 10 of any single variety, so we order only the most currently popular varieties on the most adaptable rootstocks to sell in paper pots.

Bareroot trees bypass container planting (saves money!) and go directly into the ground where they take off quickly (saves time!). Besides ease of bareroot transplanting, Special Order Fruit Trees (SOFT) encompass many more varieties and different rootstock choices.

Click here to see the complete list of SOFT varieties and prices. Plant your own custom garden of eatin'.

What's New In Veggies!

After many requests, Ruben has found a source for Pandan Spice. He is also pleased to offer a couple of "spinach" plants that are heat-tolerant and tasty. Come browse our veggie section often, as new and exciting additions appear weekly.

Pandan Spice (Pendants amaryllifolius) is an Asian herb containing the same compounds that give basmati rice and jasmine rice their nutty fragrance. It is easy to grow indoors or out. It grows quickly outside in full sun. Indoors, it needs sun and appreciates extra humidity, especially in the winter. Use the leaves fresh or dried to flavor rice dishes and even desserts.

Okinawa Spinach (Gunura crepiodes) is not a true spinach but is eaten in the same preparations. It is also used medicinally, as it is said to lower cholesterol. Both the leaves and shoots are tasty.

The purple underside of the leaf adds color and excitement to salads. It makes a handsome groundcover in an edible garden.

Malabar Spinach (Basella rubra) is also not a true spinach, but very similar in flavor and use. It grows as a vine of rounded green leaves with red veins and stems. The young tips are delicious in salads and stir-fries.

Find Your Thrill -
Plant A Blueberry Hill!

Picking your own homegrown blueberries IS a thrill! Blueberries thrive here when planted in an acid soil mix. The Santa Clara Master Gardeners planted a test garden that proved that not only will blueberries thrive here, but when mulched well, will thrive with less water than anyone expected.

Blueberries are a "superfood" and well worth growing. They are also attractive plants that can function as informal hedges or borders in the edible landscape. They do well in containers on the deck or patio. They can grow in full sun or half sun.

Add blueberries to your garden and find your thrill. We offer a Blueberry Guide that covers planting and care as well as variety descriptions. Currently we have the following in stock:
Jewel
Jubilee
Misty
Pink Lemonade
O'Neal
Southmoon
Sunshine Blue

Fight Grubs NOW!

As with fighting any other battle, timing is the key to success. April and August are key months when grub control is most successful. Grubs are the larvae of beetles or moths. In spring, grubs become adults, mate and lay eggs that become the next generation of grubs. The April treatment controls the end stage of grubs before egg laying and the August to September treatment controls the grubs before they dig themselves in deep for hibernation. Grubs feed all summer long, eating the roots of your lawn and growing nice and fat before hibernating for the winter.

Raccoons and skunks love to harvest and eat grubs at their fattest. Those pesky critters can roll back a lawn like a carpet to get at the tasty grubs. It is amazing to see the amount of damage a nocturnal feeding frenzy can do to a lawn.

Yamagami's offers 2 natural options for control: beneficial nematodes and Safer's Grub Killer. The nematodes are safe to use on lawns, flowerbeds, and veggie gardens. It is using good bugs to get the bad ones. Apply the nematodes in the evening. They lay their eggs in the grubs. The eggs hatch and eat their way out of the grub...nice.

Protect your lawn the natural, safer way with Safer Grub Killer. It comes in a handy hose-end sprayer bottle for ease of application. Its active ingredient is Neem oil, the extract of the Neem tree.

If you or one of your neighbors has had a lawn torn up by critters, do something now to prevent it from happening again. Let the Nursery Pros at Yamagami's show you how.
