Some Words To The Wise:
Spring Is A Month Away!

Spring fever strikes the first sunny weekend of January. By mid-February, many cannot resist some spring planting despite all warnings. If you MUST plant tomatoes (or other tender plants) early, give them a fighting chance with as much protection from cold as you can. A greenhouse or cold-frame offers the best protection. A Kozy Coat acts as a portable greenhouse for tender plants.

Tomatoes grow when night temperature is consistently above 50°F. That's when the soil temperature starts to warm and roots can get growing. Use plastic sheeting on the soil to help hold in the heat. Use frost protection fabric over the plants and tack it down to the soil around the plant to mitigate the cold. Depending on where you live, your tomatoes and peppers may need protection until May.

If you have the space, we suggest trying an experiment to see what planting dates give you the earliest and best fruit production. Try planting an Early Girl every 10 days and tracking how well they perform. We'd love to see how they do for you so please share photos of their development.

Fresh Off The Truck:

We've just received our spring shipment of Rhododendrons. We have a large selection of varieties from small to tall. They'll be glorious this spring in colors ranging from pink to red to purple to cream. Rhododendrons prefer an acid soil. Follow our Planting Guide for guaranteed success. Plant them where they get full morning sun and shade during the heat of the day.

Following are just a few of the varieties in stock:

Firestorm blazes in the garden with large, bright red blossoms. It is a slow growing, compact (3' to 4' tall and wide) plant suitable for a foundation planting or low border.

Hoopla causes a hoopla in the garden with its clusters of pink flowers flaunting yellow throats. It is a moderate grower that gets 5' to 7' tall and wide.

Hotei has large clusters of canary yellow flowers, not very commonly seen in Rhododendrons. It is a compact (3' tall and wide) plant. It makes a gorgeous small hedge.

Purple Passion offers a profusion of rich, reddish purple flowers highlighted with white and maroon freckles. It is a moderate grower reaching 5' tall and wide.

Now In Stock:
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds!

If you like growing and eating heirloom veggies, you will love the unusual seed varieties offered by Baker Creek Seeds! They offer hundreds of rare varieties (not all at the same time) in small quantities. All are open-pollinated and non-GMO. Come see our selection!

Fabulous Poppies
From Annie's Annuals

Plant poppies now for a spectacular late spring display! Annie's Annuals offers an amazing array of varieties, including single forms as well as double forms. They can be so fantastic that it's hard to believe your eyes! Try planting them around tree roses for a color knock out!

Unlike California poppies, most of these prefer a well-amended soil so we recommend mixing G&B Organics Harvest Supreme into your garden soil before planting. Like California Poppies, they prefer sun and will reseed for years of enjoyment. The following varieties are currently available:

Lavender Feathers Poppy has super frilly, double lavender blossoms up to 5" across. The plants grow to 3' tall. They are bee magnets! They will self-sow.

Greek Poppy offers a profusion of bright red flowers over ferny, mounded plants growing 20" tall and 20" wide. They have a long blooming period.

'Falling in Love' is a new strain of field poppy (P. rhoeas) featuring semi-double and double blossoms in Valentine colors of pinks, reds, whites and even some peachy shades.

Deadhead frequently for a long season of bloom. More compact than the others, these top out at 30" tall.

These poppies are just a sampling of the garden treasures available from Annie's Annuals and Yamagami's Nursery. Come see our ever-expanding selection and treat yourself to something extraordinary!

Eden Valley Potting Soil
With Biochar

Biochar is a specially produced charcoal now being used to improve soils. It is very porous and helps soil retain water and nutrients. It attracts and nurtures beneficial soil microbes. Healthy colonies of soil microbes help plants fight off pests and diseases in the soil.

Use Eden Valley Potting Soil With Biochar for the healthiest plants. It is from G&B Organics, so it's OMRI approved for organic gardeners.
