Our Picks This Month

Here at the nursery, we're crazy for Camellias! Camellia season is here, and we have a great selection of both old favorites and exciting new varieties in stock. Stop by and browse; these beautiful plants are worth finding a spot for!

Nuccio's Pearl (Camellia japonica 'Nuccio's Pearl')

One of the star specimens of California's star Camellia grower! This variety boasts spectacular, fully double blooms with pure white petals edged with an orchid pink blush. Those flowers offer a dramatic contrast against the glossy, dark green foliage, and the dense, compact form adds an elegant, formal appearance to any garden. This variety blooms for a fairly long period in mid-late season. Evergreen.

Nuccio's Bella Rossa (Camellia japonica 'Nuccio's Bella Rossa')

Originally created by Nuccio nurseries in Altadena, California, the Nuccio's were so excited about this variety that they immediately patented it - a first in their history. One look at this luscious Camellia, and it's easy to see what the fuss is about! Abundant numbers of BIG, double, formal, crimson red flowers open slowly for an especially long bloom season. Glossy, dark, evergreen foliage makes this a prized plant at any time of year. Can tolerate full shade, and looks equally fabulous in either mass plantings, or as a specimen in a large container.

White Doves (Camellia sasanqua 'White Doves')

The sparkling white, semi-double blooms on 'White Doves' create a breathtaking sight in full bloom, and its compact, spreading form makes it the perfect variety for smaller gardens. Utilize it as an evergreen low hedge, espalier, or groundcover, or plant it in a container as a stunning specimen. Whatever place you give it in your garden, you're guaranteed a winter of dramatic, snow-colored blooms!

Meet Our Growers: The Nuccio Family

Located in Altadena, California, the Nuccio name is synonymous with spectacular Camellias. Founded in the 1930s by brothers Julius and Joe, Nuccio's Nurseries remains in the family today, managed by Julius' and Joe's children, Tom, Jim, and Julius.

Along with cultivating old favorites, the Nuccios are constantly pushing the boundaries of what a Camellia can be. Through propagation and breeding, they have introduced exciting new features like frilly petals, dramatic variegation, and high fragrance. Between 1950 and 2018, Nuccio's introduced a jaw-dropping 210 Camellias. They have won the prestigious Illges Seedling Japonica Award from The American Camellia Society 13 times, and their award-winning cultivars are still popular and widely distributed.

Nuccio's Nurseries may have achieved world-wide fame and renown, but at its roots, it remains an old-school, family business. Each visitor to the nursery is personally assisted by friendly and knowledgeable sales staff, including the owners. They don't use computers, and don't take credit cards. This may feel too old-school for some, but Nuccio's has an old-school customer service ethic to match.

If you've stumbled in without an alternate way to pay, you'll be invited take your plants home and simply mail them a check.

Featured Recipe: Beef Pumpkin Stew

This Halloween, get dinner squared away early! This stew is the perfect Halloween meal: it's hearty, pumpkin-based, and can be started well before the doorbell starts ringing. Stash the candy bowl by the door, and enjoy a dinner that's hauntingly delicious..

Serves 4-6

  • 2 pounds beef (stew meat or chuck roast)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef stock or broth
  • 2 cups pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 pound carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 2-3 thyme sprigs

Large soup or stock pot

  1. Cut the beef into 1-inch chunks.
  2. Dredge the beef in the flour until all of the beef sides are covered.
  3. In a large soup pot, melt the butter over medium high-heat. In small quantities, brown the beef on all sides, removing the browned beef and setting it aside in a large bowl as you go.
  4. When the beef is browned, add the onion and the garlic to the pot. Sauté the onion and garlic for one minute, scraping the bottom of the pot as you stir.
  5. Return the browned beef to the pot and add the beef stock, pumpkin puree, five-spice powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well and bring to a boil.
  6. Once the liquid is boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the potatoes, carrots and thyme sprigs to the pot and increase heat to medium. Cook for an additional 30 minutes.
  8. Salt to taste and serve.

Serving Suggestions:
