Our Picks This Month

The holidays are just around the corner, and here at the nursery, things are looking festive. Whether you're in the market for holiday classics or looking for new and exciting ways to deck your halls, we can help you get your garden Christmas-card ready!

Shrubs & Color -

Go the eco-route, and plant a living Christmas tree this year! We have traditional, unique, and even edible evergreen options, just waiting to be the star of your holiday show!

Spruce up your yard this holiday season! We have both full size and dwarf spruces to choose from. Make your yard merry and bright!

'Dwarf Alberta' - This perfectly cone-shaped dwarf conifer makes an excellent miniature Christmas tree in its natural form, or prune it into an artistic topiary.

We have both cone and spiral shapes!

'Baby Blue' - The dense, striking, silvery-blue-green foliage holds its color well.

A slow-growing, semi-dwarf variety, it's the perfect option for smaller landscapes and confined spaces.

'Weeping Norway' - Naturally low-growing form composed of weeping branches that trail outward, densely blanketed with rich green needles.

Excellent when trained in a staked form to feature its naturally pendulous form

Of all the trees that are in the wood, the Holly bears the crown - and one look at any of the spectacular Hollies we have in stock will show you why!

Variegated English Holly - Dark-green leaves edged with creamy-white margins will brighten your winter garden! Plant a male English Holly nearby as a pollinizer for berry set.

'Sky Pencil' -This narrow, vertical form with neat, dark green foliage makes an elegant, formal statement in large containers. Looks gorgeous encircled with white Christmas lights!

Boxwood Cone

Korean Boxwood - Korean Boxwood is a small, mounded, broadleaf evergreen shrub with small, glossy, light green leaves with a uniform formal habit.

Rosemary Cone

Our Tuscan Blue Rosemary cones are beautiful, festive... and edible! With fragrant evergreen foliage that takes well to pruning and abundant clear blue flowers, these make a wonderful addition to walkways and patios.

Houseplants -

There's no place like home for the holidays! Make your indoors as merry and bright as your outdoors with a festive houseplant... or two... or three (we won't tell if you don't!).

Cymbidium Orchid

Spectacular sprays of thick, waxy flowers make Cymbidiums a go-to for flower arrangements and corsages, and a stunning addition to any indoor space. Come browse our brand new selection, and get your own gorgeous Cymbidiums before they're gone!

All hail the king of Christmas plants! Poinsettias have landed in the Houseplant Room. Choose from our selection of Red, White, and Bicolored in a variety of sizes. Buy a few for yourself, and a few more to pass out as gifts!

PROJECT: Force Amaryllis for Christmas Bloom

Poinsettia may be the king of Christmas plants, but Amaryllis is definitely the queen!

In the dark of midwinter, few things are more uplifting than an Amaryllis bulb's cheerful green stalk in a bright windowsill. Blooms typically show up 6 to 8 weeks after potting, so if you want your Amaryllis to bloom for Christmas or New Year's, now is the time to get planting!

Amaryllis bulb
A pot slightly larger than the bulb (1/2" to 2" around the sides of the bulb) - make sure it has a drainage hole in the bottom
G&B Organics Potting Soil
Bamboo stake

1. Choose a healthy bulb. Choose a large bulb without blemishes or mold. If you stored a bulb from last year and there's a chance moisture got to it, discard that bulb and start with a fresh one.

2. Fill the bottom of the pot with a couple of inches of soil. Set the bulb in the container, root threads first, and fill the rest of the container with soil. Once finished, the bulb should have its top half sticking out of the soil.

3. Stake it! Push in a bamboo or other type stake just to the side of the bulb. This will lend support to the Amaryllis' leaves and stem once growth takes off.

4. Water in. Water the soil until excess moisture is draining from the bottom. Keep the potting soil just barely moist until you see green growth.

Once the leaves appear, provide evenly moist (not soggy) soil.

Place pot in an area that has bright light. Once growth occurs, rotate the pot every few days to keep the stalk straight. When flowers appear, move the plant to a location with indirect light to prolong the blooms.

Wait until you see green before fertilizing. Once green growth appears, fertilize with a diluted (by half) water soluble food every 2 to 3 weeks.

Plenty of stores will sell you blooming Amaryllis around the holidays, but with this spunky, flashy bulb, the journey truly is part of the destination. Follow these easy steps to force your own bulb, then sit back and enjoy a colorful holiday display!

Featured Recipe: Winter Galette

Tired of turkey? This elegant recipe is basically a fancy vegetable pizza, and comes together as easily as 1,2,3!

Serves 6-8

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 3/4 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cubed and chilled
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons ice water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 large shallot, thinly sliced
  • Kosher salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 cup whole-milk ricotta
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest plus 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 large garlic clove, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1 teaspoon minced oregano, plus leaves for sprinkling
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced rosemary, plus leaves for sprinkling
  • 1/2 pound acorn squash - seeded, peeled and shaved into ribbons
  • 1/2 pound celery root, peeled and shaved into ribbons
  • 1 small baking potato, peeled and shaved into ribbons
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • 2 teaspoons honey, warmed

Step 1: Make the dough</strong>
1. In a food processor, combine both flours with the salt and pulse to mix.
2. Add the butter and pulse until pea-size pieces form.
3. Add the sour cream, ice water and lemon juice and pulse until the dough starts to come together.
4. Transfer to a light floured work surface, gather any crumbs and knead until smooth.
5. Pat into a disk, wrap in plastic and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.

Step 2: Make the filling
1. Preheat the oven to 400°.
2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. In a small skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil.
4. Add the shallot, season with salt and cook over moderately low heat, stirring, until softened, about 5 minutes. Let cool.

Step 3: Put it all together
1. In a small bowl, mix the ricotta with the lemon zest, garlic, the 1 teaspoon of thyme and the minced oregano and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper.
2. In a large bowl, toss the squash with the celery root, potato and remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
3. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the dough to a 13-inch round. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
4. Spread the ricotta on the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
5. Pile the squash mixture on the ricotta and scatter the shallots on top.
6. Fold 1 1/2 inches of the dough edge over the vegetables. Sprinkle with thyme, oregano and rosemary leaves. Brush the dough edge with the beaten egg.
7. Bake the galette for 15 minutes, until starting to brown.
8. Sprinkle the Parmigiano over the filling and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the vegetables are tender and the crust is golden.
9. In a small bowl, mix the honey with the lemon juice. Drizzle the lemon honey over the galette. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Perfect Pairing - an equally elegant, oaky Chardonnay.
  • Simple mesclun salad.
  • Charcuterie and cheese plate.
