Summer Lawn Care should be easy because in the summer, the lawn wants
to 'kick back' and 'be green.' Problem is, the environment, Mother Nature
and 'we,' all seem to be working at cross purposes. We recommend slower
release, lower nitrogen, organic lawn fertilizers in summer to help your
lawn 'kick back' and 'be green' without forcing thirsty, fast growing
and trouble-susceptible new growth. Proper watering guidelines can be
found on our FREE Lawn Watering Guide originally published by the Santa
Clara Valley Water District and later modified by me.
The most common summer question we get at Yamamgami's is, "Why do
I have brown spots in my lawn?" Basically there are 3 answers to
this question: too little water, an insect infestation (most likely grubs)
or a fungus problem, which is usually the result of too much water. On
the back of our FREE Lawn Watering Guide, I have developed a 3 step method
to help you diagnosis your problem brown spots.
Briefly: If it is a dry spot, a screwdriver test can easily identify
the problem. Push it into a green spot and then compare it to the effort
needed to push it into a brown spot. If the brown spot is harder, it indicates
a watering problem which will necessitate an examination of your watering
system. Next, if it is an insect, flood the area with a solution of lukewarm
water and dishwashing soap. If grubs are there, the soap will act as an
irritant and force them to the surface. Finally, if neither of these methods
indicates a problem, this usually means it is a fungus. Now you will need
to provide us a 4 inch by 4 inch by 4 inch sample of your turf, roots
and all. The sample should include part of the brown spot and mostly the
area around the brown ON THE SAME PIECE, for us to examine. It’s
in the transition zone that fungus leaves its distinctive marks.

Meet Ron Kanemoto, CCN Pro. He has over 30 years of experience in the
nursery industry and has been the General Manager for Yamagami's since
1989. In addition to running things here, Ron is our resident lawn expert.
He's the man to see when you have problems figuring out what’s going
on with your lawn. He teaches classes here on both lawn care and general
watering practices. He also serves on a landscape advisory committee for
the Santa Clara Valley Water District.
In his spare time (there isn't much) Ron keeps busy with lots of family
activities with aunts, uncles, cousins, his sister and niece. He drives
a Corvette and has Mario Andretti fantasies. He has even participated
in a class at Infineon Raceway. Other need-for-speed activities have included
mountain biking, river rafting and snow boarding.
Be sure to check our web site, yamagamisnursery.com,
regularly for listings of classes in Summer, Fall and Winter. Ron usually
teaches one or more classes each season. Not only an expert on lawns and
water, Ron was our buyer for garden medicine and supplies for many years.
He's our all around go-to guy for all our garden remedy questions. Say
hi to him on your next visit and be sure to bring in samples of any lawn
or garden problems.
