Special Monrovia Coupon

Only a few more days to pick up a special postcard from Monrovia while you’re here shopping during our fall sale (ending October 9). It’s worth $20 towards the purchase of any Monrovia plant on October 13th, 14th and 15th. That will be just after we bring in fresh plants to restock after the sale. Look for beautiful Hydrangeas, Azaleas and other distinctively better plants from Monrovia.

Prepare for Success

article picture

Prepare for success! Yes, our Anniversary sale makes it easy to buy beautiful garden plants at tremendous savings but don’t stop there. There are several things you can do to make sure your new garden plants thrive. Our “Planting Kits,” available for just $15 with plant purchases, include the basic soil amendment, starter fertilizer and Root Stimulator you need to get everything started off right. But there's even more you can do to prepare for success and to rejuvenate and pro-tect established plantings.

John & Bob's Soil Optimizer is like concentrated humus. It is already what your mulches will become, a shortcut in other words. Use it on top of your soil twice a year for established lawns and gardens and as a pre-plant soil additive for your new plantings. Use it in addition to your fertilizers and they will both work better! Primarily it is a great source of Humic Acid, which has many plant strengthening benefits. It even helps with cold tolerance and is recommended for all of you who planted our cool season tomatoes.

Once your new plantings are in the ground, it's time to think about protecting them from critters both large and small. Deer are curious and hungry and can wreak havoc on new plantings as well as established ones. To repel them, we recommend broadcasting Deer Scram from Enviro Protection Industries around new and established plant-ings. This environmentally safe product lasts up to 30 days and can save a newly planted plant's life.

If Skunks, racoons or squirrels are potential enemies of your new or established plantings we recommend using Critter Ridder from Havavart. This organic product relies on oil of black pepper to keep nosy critters from being tempted to dig up your plantings. It even works on unwanted cat and dog invasions. You can also use it around garbage bags and cans to discourage rummaging.

Finally, beware the ravages of hungry slugs and snails. Sluggo is an all-organic product that is safe to use around children and pets. It even breaks down into nutrients a plant can use. Use it to protect tender young plantings. Every snail you kill now is one less that will be breeding in the rainy season.

Prepare for success, with plants and supplies from Yamagami's Nursery. We're here to help you succeed…the first time!

Meet Jason

article picture

High-energy and super helpful, Jason Murray has worked part-time at Yamagami’s Nursery for the last 2 years on the Facilities staff. He’s one of the guys who carry out your purchases in between receiving and stocking our shipments. Before working here, he learned the business working at Sunnyvale Nursery for 4 years. He is working his way through San Jose State where he is a Creative Arts major. He hopes to teach kindergarten once he gets his teaching credential.

Jason grew up on a ranch in Idaho and prefers to be in the great outdoors. When he's not at work or studying, he loves extreme sports like mountain biking, skate and snow boarding and has recently taken up surfing. He enjoys peaceful outdoor activities too, like hiking and camping. He also enjoys a good game of chess. One thing he can't do is be a couch potato.

All his energy serves him well at Yamagami's. He is always ready to take on the most physical activities, be it setting up our fountains or helping to construct our ever-changing displays. His favorite part of the job here is working on ponds, fountains and water features. He understands our pumps and filters better than any of the sales people and we all rely on him for help. If you have water feature questions, don't be shy about asking for Jason. In addition to being knowledgeable, you'll find him friendly and cheerful too. Jason wants you to succeed in your gardening projects…the first time.

Giant Whitefly - Yuk!

article picture

Giant Whitefly has arrived and made a sticky mess of certain plants. If you see your hibiscus, citrus or xylosma tips covered in white and trailing long spider webby filaments, it's probably from Giant Whitefly. First, trim off the badly coated leaves, usually found at the tips. This removes most of the breeding population. Then use a Bug Blaster which uses water from your hose to wash the remaining eggs and mess off your plants. After the plants have dried, spray your citrus and garden plants with Ultra-Fine Oil. On non-edible plants you also have the option of using Bayer Tree and Shrub, which is applied directly to the roots, NO spraying! It is important to start control measures as soon as you see evidence of this pest as they breed rapidly.
