Quotation of the Week:
"I should like to inflame the whole world with my taste for gardening. There is no virtue that I would not attribute to the man who lives to project and execute gardens." - Prince De Ligne

Now is the best time to add lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) to your garden. Lilacs are among the most highly prized garden plants for fragrance. Most people associate them with the chilly Midwest and Northern climes but there are lilacs for California. The Descanso hybrids were developed in Southern California and do not require a hard freeze to develop beautiful, fragrant blossoms. They are tolerant of our hot, dry summers and even prefer a slightly alkaline soil, perfect candidates for our area. |

|
We offer three different Descanso hybrid lilacs, grown by Monrovia Growers. Lavender Lady is the most purple of the group and the most popular. Blue Skies is lighter and more ”lilac” in color. Angel White is white (duh) and maybe the most fragrant of the group. They have just arrived with swelling buds, so come in quickly since this first shipment always sells out right away. Let one of our CCN Pros help you choose a Lilac or your garden. |
|
| Looking for an evergreen perennial for your shade garden? Consider adding one or more Hellebores. These old-fashioned beauties are tough and long-lived. They sail right through our coldest winter, then bloom away in spring. Their blossoms are nodding bells in shades of white, pink and an occasional purple. We have just received several varieties including 'Christmas Rose' and 'Lenten Rose', which actually bloom about the same time. We’ve got a great selection culled from some of our best growers, and ready to plant. Be sure to check out the double flowered 'Party Dress' helleborus--they are quite showy! |

You may recognize Alan Tagami from all the classes he teaches here or from the invaluable assistance he offers at our Info Center. He is so knowledgeable and experienced that often he is mistaken for the owner of the nursery. Alan has only worked as a nurseryperson here for the last three years, but has oodles of experience. He was born into a nursery family and worked at a retail nursery for fourteen years before working as a landscape contractor for twenty five years. He worked at construction and remodeling at Yamagami’s for about 10 years as a contractor before joining the staff as a nurseryperson.
At Yamagami’s, Alan divides his efforts between teaching classes, handling our landscape consultations and working on the floor as a nurseryperson. In other words, he is one busy guy. Among the classes he teaches are Pruning 101, Landscape 101 and Pruning Japanese Maples. He restarted our Landscape Consultation Service and has designed some beautiful, practical gardens for busy homeowners. On the floor, he is happiest helping customers solve their landscape problems.
In his free time (what there is of it) Alan enjoys the masochistic pleasures of golf. He takes day trips with a Seniors Group and loves to go to Golden Gate Fields to watch the horses. He is an active member of the Elks Lodge in Sunnyvale. He and Betty, his wife of forty years, make their home in Santa Clara not far from where his mother still lives and gardens.
Alan is here Sunday through Thursday except when he is out on consultations. Be sure to bring him your landscaping questions and enjoy the benefit of his many years of experience. His favorite part of his job is chatting with our customers and getting to know you and your gardens. Alan is here to help you succeed the first time in all your gardening efforts!
