Yamagami’s has just received a fresh shipment of a dozen different varieties of certified organic seed potatoes from Irish Eyes. Many are heirloom varieties and all are tasty. We offer seed potatoes in a rainbow of colors including red, white, blue and yellow. We even have the “fingerlings” found in finer dining. The flavor of fresh dug potatoes far surpasses that of grocery store spuds.
Potatoes are easy to grow and very prolific. You can grow them in the ground in containers, and on top of the ground in raised beds. Pick up a copy of our FREE Growing Potatoes Guide for complete instructions. If you don’t dig digging, then try growing them in a half barrel, a garbage can or even in a garbage bag. This is a great family project.
For the bag method you will want a 20-30 gallon size thick walled bag. Cut some 1" drainage holes in the bottom and place it in a sunny spot. Fill it about 1/3 full with Gardner & Bloome Acid Planting Mix then roll down the sides of the bag to about 6” above soil line. Add a cup of Dr. Earth Tomato Vegetable and Herb Food to the soil and mix well. Plant 4 – 6 seed potatoes just below the surface around the outer edge of the bag and water well. When new top growth is 6” to 8” long, add Gardner & Bloome Soil Building Compost so that just the top leaf tips remain uncovered. Roll up the sides of the bag another 6 inches. Repeat when new growth is 6” to 8” long. Keep soil moist but not soggy. After plants flower, they turn yellow and die.
Then it's time to harvest by either dumping or cutting open the bag.
Yamagami’s offers the following varieties:
- All Blue
- All Red
- Butterfinger
- Cal White
- Dark Red Norland
- French Fingerling
- Red Gold

What’s Bugging Your Citrus Trees?
|
It Might Be Citrus Leaf Miner
The citrus leaf miner is a new insect pest that has started showing up in Northern California. The larvae are laid by tiny, minute, silvery white moths that tunnel within the leaves, leaving snaking trails of dead tissue behind. Other symptoms of infestation include curling of leaves and, in severe cases, even succulent young branches of green shoots may be attacked.
Although leaf miners don't usually demolish an entire plant, they can cause quite a bit of unsightly damage. This makes it important to start controlling this pest at the first signs of attack and following up with repeat applications to break the life cycle of this insect pest.
Citrus leaf miners tunnel between the upper and lower surfaces of leaves to lay eggs. The clear waxy trail they leave behind is unmistakable--and permanent. Once they eat a path between leaf surfaces, they drop off the leaf to pupate in the soil beneath. Then the whole process starts over again, yielding several generations of leaf miners over the course of a summer.
Controlling leaf miners is difficult because they are protected by the upper and lower leaf surfaces. We recommend removing (and destroying) affected leaves. If the problem is severe, try treating your infected plants with Monterey Garden Insect Spray containing Spinosad. What is most important is to be on the lookout for this pest for early intervention!
If you are not sure about damage you see on your citrus, bring a sample (in a sealed plastic bag) to the Info Center for ID and treatment recommendations by our Nursery Pros. We are here to help you succeed…the first time! |
