'Yuletide' and Other Winter Blooming Camellias
|
|
If you are looking for a way to add color to your garden in the winter, consider planting sasanqua Camellias. They produce an attractive show of flowers from early autumn into late winter, blooming long before their better known (japonica) cousins. Add to that, bright glossy green leaves and interesting growth habits and you have "a must" for your winter garden.
Of all the sasanquas, 'Yuletide' is a stand-out. Yamagami’s Nursery had a specimen (in front of the nursery before a remodel) that bloomed from Halloween to Valentine’s Day. It is upright with small leaves and bright red single blossoms highlighted with golden stamens. It can be trained as an espalier (terrific substitute for a shade vine), as a patio tree or left in shrub form. It is even dense enough to be planted as a hedge!
Sasanquas can be low and spreading, upright, or tall and willowy. Sasanqua flowers can be single, semi-double, or fully double and can be small, medium or rather large, in shades of pink, rose, red, white, and combinations.
Sasanqua Camellias can be planted in containers and in shrub and tree beds with equal success. This allows you to place them on patios and decks, or near walkways for greater enjoyment. They can also be used for bonsai specimens, espaliers, informal hedges, screens or graceful focal points in the garden.
One of the outstanding characteristics of sasanqua Camellias is that they will tolerate more sun exposure than spring-flowering types of camellias. They are sometimes called “Sun Camellias” but the truth of it is that they just tolerate sun better, they don’t need it. Like all camellias, they prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Be sure to follow our FREE How to Plant Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendron Guide for guaranteed success.
Come to Yamagami’s Nursery to see sasanquas in bloom. Let one of our Nursery Professionals help you choose sasanquas and other winter color for your garden. We are here to help you succeed…the first time! |

Make It Something Handy!
Whether you are a sometime gardener or a gardening fanatic, good tools make a big difference. Winter is a big pruning season and good tools are truly needed. Sometimes a whole new tool is the answer and sometimes sharpening and oiling a good tool is all that’s needed.
Power Gear® Loppers by Fiskars have to be the best loppers we’ve ever used. Because of their ratcheting Power Gear® action, they cut 3 times more easily than conventional loppers! They are lightweight but so well constructed they have a lifetime guarantee. They are available in a 27” length which cuts up to 2” diameter branches. They make tree pruning fast and easy!
If your good quality tools are getting dull, try a sharpening tool from Bahco. It’s lightweight, inexpensive and easy to use. It features tungsten carbide edges for resharpening of all cutting blades. It has a comfortable handle for a firm grip. We use it here for our tools! Get one for yourself too!
Bug Blasters® are one of our most popular tools because they provide SAFE year-round pest control. They use water from your hose to blast pests from your plants, killing pests, without damaging your plants. In the winter you can use them to wash aphids from your lettuce and other cool season greens. They also help wash away the ugly debris left behind by earlier pest infestations (like sooty mold). Use them often during the growing seasons to prevent early aphid and whitefly forays from turning into major infestations. They are even safe for delicate Japanese Maples!
