Plant Your Backyard Orchard Now!
Your backyard orchard can consist of one tree or a dozen! Yamagami’s offers a terrific selection of fruit trees especially chosen to thrive in our area. You’ll find old favorites as well as newer treats found mostly at better Farmer’s Markets. They are all root pruned and potted up in biodegradable paper pots, guaranteed to grow! Just keep them watered as needed and you can leave them in those pots for up to 6 months if you are not yet ready to plant.
A new Apple choice for us this year is Hudson Golden Gem. I sampled this apple at an apple tasting and was thrilled. Out of the dozens of samples, it was my favorite. Crisp and crunchy yet juicy, it is also sweet with depth of flavor. It almost reminded me of a pear, yet other tasters described it as having a nutty flavor. It is a large fruit, russeted like a Bosc pear. Although it is listed with a 800 to 1000 hour chill requirement, the fruit I tasted came from an orchard in Watsonville with nowhere near that amount of chill. It’s just another example of why so many fruit growers are skeptical of chill requirements (except in the case of cherries). It is also partially self-pollinating, but I would definitely recommend having another apple (Fuji or Golden Delicious) available for cross-pollinating.
Another of my favorite fruits are the Apriums. We offer 2 varieties of these Apricot/Plum crosses. One of the benefits of this cross is the vigor and disease resistance of plum trees combined with the richness of the apricot’s flavor. Flavor Delight is so like a golden apricot in appearance that it has been sold as an apricot, with no one the wiser. There are differences in their flavor and texture, if not their appearance. A Flavor Delight Aprium has more of the plum’s tangy flavor and juicy flesh. Cot-n-Candy is a white-fleshed Aprium with exceptionally sweet and juicy fruit, truly unique. It was the hit of the fruit tasting when it debuted! I had to plant one as soon as the trees became available for sale.

Convert your Landscape into an Edible One with Vegetable Garden Perennials
Time to plant some dormant perennial vegetables for years of happy harvests. Many of these are so attractive that there is really no need to hide them in the kitchen garden. Go ahead and plant them with your other landscape plants and enjoy their show. Rhubarb, horseradish and asparagus are now in stock bareroot. 'Crimson Cherry' rhubarb is an excellent example of a showy perennial whose red stems and large leaves make a bold statement in a landscape. Growing to about 2’ tall and wide, a clump of dramatic 'Crimson Cherry' rhubarb works well as a punctuation point in the landscape.
Asparagus is another good example of an attractive addition to the landscape. After bearing edible shoots in spring, it develops tall ferny fronds that make a beautiful backdrop to summer flowers or even summer vegetables. Good companion plants for asparagus are tomato, parsley, and basil.
Asparagus has been grown for at least two millennia. It's a good source of vitamin A and also has good amounts of calcium, folic acid and vitamin C. A cool season perennial which can live for decades, asparagus does require some work to get started, but unlike other vegetables, it will keep producing for many, many years. It will need regular watering in early years but requires much less work or water than most other vegetables once it becomes established. Besides, those little shoots peeping out each year are a great harbinger that spring has arrived. Plus, once you've tasted freshly picked asparagus, you'll never go back to the store-bought stuff! |
Yamagami’s Nursery offers FREE Planting Guides for asparagus as well as for rhubarb and horseradish. Buying and planting them now saves you 2 years over planting them from seed or seedlings, so come quickly while they are in stock. Let Yamagami’s Nursery Pros help you succeed in your own Garden of Eatin’. |
Plant A Very Berry Summer Garden
Bare-root raspberries and a new gooseberry have just arrived. Look for 6 varieties of raspberries, including Fall Gold, a very tasty golden variety. Some are everbearers and some are summer bearers. Just imagine going out to a wall of berries to pick fresh raspberries for breakfast all summer long, Yum! We offer a FREE Berry Guide with training information for guaranteed success.
New for us this year is an almost thornless gooseberry, the aptly named ‘Pixwell’. It is perhaps the best gooseberry variety on the market today. It produces prolific crops of flavorful, pale green fruit that turn pink when fully ripe (August). ‘Pixwell’ usually bears fruit the year after planting and makes delicious pies and jelly. It is a dense, rounded, glossy-leafed shrub about 4’ tall and wide, suitable for hedge planting in the open or partially shaded areas. It needs regular summer and winter pruning to maximize fruit production. While it takes full sun to part shade, it does not like windy locations.
Raspberries and the gooseberry are just the beginning of the berries we will offer this spring. Our blueberries are expected to arrive in February with the first of the blackberries. Watch our website for arrival information. When you decide to plant an edible landscape or just want to increase the number of fruit you can grow yourself, just come to Yamagami’s Nursery where our Nursery Pros can guide you to the varieties that will thrive here. We are here to help you succeed…the first time! |
