Nick's Planting Suggestion: Fragrant English Roses!
|
Choose David Austin® (English) roses for the best of the old and the new in roses. David Austin hybridizes roses with the goal of combining old world fragrance and flower forms with the reblooming and disease resistance of modern hybrid roses. To say he has succeeded is such an understatement! Others are now also developing hybrids, but the Austin® English roses are still the standard by which others are judged. Yamagami’s has just received a large shipment of beautiful, blooming David Austin roses. Here are just a few examples of these English beauties: |
 |
'Lady Emma Hamilton' blooms in a wonderful blend of oranges and golds. As you approach to admire them, you’ll catch their strong fruity fragrance. She is a relatively small, upright plant growing about 4 feet tall by 3 feet wide. She’s a real garden stunner! |
 |
'Gentle Hermione' has old-fashioned perfectly cupped flowers of pure pink. She exudes a warm, "old rose" fragrance. Disease resistant 'Gentle Hermione' forms a rounded shrub with slightly arching stems growing to about 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide. |
 |
'Benjamin Britten' has deeply cupped flowers of red with a touch of orange and a strong and fruity fragrance. It forms a medium-sized bush about 4 feet tall and wide. It grows well in a container and also makes a good border plant. |
David Austin® English roses don’t need to be isolated in just a rose garden setting. They are perfect for borders or even large containers. For roses with old-fashioned fragrance and modern disease resistance, plant David Austin® English roses. Let the Nursery Pros at Yamagami's help you choose varieties for your garden.

Ruben's Planting Suggestions
|

A Honey of a Squash: 'Honey Bear'
For a honey of a space-saving crop, grow 'Honey Bear' acorn squash. It's an exceptionally sweet acorn squash on a compact plant (2-3 feet tall by 4-5 feet wide). The tasty fruit grows to about 1 lb. and, when split in half and baked, is just right for 2 people. More than just sweet, it is high in antioxidants too. 'Honey Bear' is mildew resistant and will continue to grow and fruit until frost. It is such an achiever that it was an All American Seed Winner for 2009. Try one in your garden and you’ll see why! |
Mona Lavender--A Lavender for the Shade?
No, it’s not really a true lavender but Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender,’ a tender perennial. ‘Mona Lavender’ sends up spikes of lavender blossoms nearly year round. Its foliage is dark green with purple undersides on a rounded bush growing to about 2 feet tall. Ever since we first offered it, this plant has been in high demand. It’s perfect for mixing with Impatiens or Begonias in shade beds or containers.
We were somewhat worried about how well it would over-winter but it came through last winter with flying colors in Ruben’s front yard. Try one in your shade garden for clouds of lavender blossoms.

Amy's Gift Suggestion: A Fountain Kit for Mom
|
Build a fountain for Mom the easy way with an Aqua Rock™ Fountain Kit. It comes in a bucket and includes a decorative rock pile, a pump, hose and complete instructions for assembling in the container of your choice. All you need to add is gravel and water! You can use the fountain indoors or outside as Aqua Rock™ Fountain Kits can also be installed directly in the ground. Since it is a pondless fountain, you don’t need to worry about mosquitoes. Bring a smile to Mom’s face with an Aqua Rock™ Fountain

A New Fruity Treat! Cot-N-Candy Aprium
|
|
Looking for something a little different for your backyard orchard? Try a Cot-N-Candy aprium. This apricot-plum cross looks like a pale apricot and tastes like a super sweet apricot, very sweet and juicy with a surprising plummy finish. I first sampled this fruit at a Dave Wilson Nursery Fruit Tasting and it was so good that the tasters (myself included) fought over it. Normally we just take a small slice or two from each sample but in this case everyone was devouring the whole fruits! I planted one in my garden as soon as they became available (2008). It is a very early ripening fruit with only a moderate chill requirement. It is self-pollinating but will produce more heavily with an apricot pollen source planted within bee range. |

| What You'll Need:
- 1 (10-ounce) can chicken broth
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust more or less to taste)
- 1
red bell pepper, chopped
- 1
10-12 oz can diced tomatoes, drained
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 3 ounces chopped bittersweet chocolate
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil (or to 1/4 inch in skillet)
- 9 corn tortillas
- 3 3/4 cups shredded jack cheese
- 3 cups cooked chicken
- white or Spanish rice
- slivered almonds
Step by Step:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Place 2/3 cup chicken broth in a large microwavable measuring cup, and heat until simmering, about 2 minutes; add raisins to broth to soften.
- In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat; add onion and sauté until translucent.
- Turn heat to medium; add garlic, chili powder, cumin, cinnamon and cayenne, stirring for 30-60 seconds or until spices begin to toast.
- Add chopped red pepper and softened raisins and stir for 1-2 minutes, until pepper is soft and flavors have begun to fully meld.
- Add canned tomatoes, chicken broth and peanut butter; add chopped chocolate and stir until combined. Turn heat down to low so chocolate does not burn.
- Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring constantly, careful to not burn chocolate. Remove from heat and cool slightly, about 5 minutes.
- Place into blender and puree until smooth; set aside, covered. (Can be frozen at this point for later use.)
- Wipe skillet clean. Pour vegetable oil into skillet, to a depth of about 1/4 inch, heating over medium-high heat.
- Fry tortillas, one at a time, just a few seconds on each side. Transfer tortillas to paper towels to drain.
- Butter or nonstick spray a shallow, 2-quart casserole dish; place 3 prepared tortillas, overlapping as necessary, along the bottom of the dish.
- Layer 1 cup of chicken atop tortillas; ladle about 1/4 of the sauce onto the chicken.
- Add about 1 cup shredded cheese and top with 3 more tortillas.
- Layer 1 cup chicken, 1/4 of the sauce and 1 cup shredded cheese.
- Top with remaining tortillas, chicken, mole sauce and cheese.
- Cover casserole with foil coated with nonstick spray face down.
- Bake at 350° for about 30 minutes. Cool chicken tortilla casserole slightly before serving.
- Garnish with sliced almonds and serve with white or Spanish rice.
Yield: 6 servings
