Time for Cool Season Vegetables!

'Cheddar' Cauliflower
Graffiti Cauliflower
'Redbor' Kale
'Toscana' or 'Dinosaur' Kale

Yamagami's Nursery has an outstanding selection of cool season vegetable plants, seeds, and sets. It's time to plant root crops, leaf crops and peas.

Plants include lettuces, cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, peas, sugar snaps and snow peas. All can be started by seed or transplant.

We recommend starting your root crops by seed, directly into the ground. Root crops include all the rainbow varieties of radishes, carrots, and beets. We offer seed of the common varieties as well as gourmet treats including Asian varieties. Vegetables that can be grown from sets include onions, garlic, shallots and potato seed (sets) (potato sets will arrive by the end of the month.)

Yamagami's offers a rainbow of gourmet treats in our plant selection.

Look for 'Cheddar' cauliflower, an exceptionally handsome and nutritious variety. It is a rich and appetizing golden color, with 25% more beta-carotene than conventional white varieties and a rich flavor to match its color. Another colorful cauliflower is 'Graffiti', a beautiful purple form. It's gorgeous in the garden, stunning raw as crudités and even holds most of its color when cooked.

Colorful in the garden and healthy for your table are the various kales. Ruben's favorite is 'Redbor', a large red-leafed kale that can be the star of a landscape, a container, or your table. Another showstopper is the 'Toscana 'or 'Dinosaur 'Kale. Its pleated blue/gray/green foliage is amazing to behold!

Kale is high in vitamins A, K, and C, plus cancer fighting properties are also appearing. As more of the health benefits of kale are being discovered, more and more chefs are using it. Try it and discover how tasty it can be.

Come to Yamagami's Nursery for our outstanding vegetable selection as well as all the supplies you need to succeed with your cool season garden. Let our friendly Nursery Pros help you plan a beautiful and bountiful cool season garden!

Buried Treasure

Perhaps one of nature's greatest miracles is the flower bulb. It goes into the ground as a crusty brown bulb, and over the course of four to five months bursts through the soil and becomes a beautiful blooming flower. For many of us, those seas of golden trumpet daffodils are the first sign that spring has truly arrived.

Daffodil/Narcissus

Tulip

Hyacinth

Tulips, crocus and daffodils are the traditional standby bulbs. But for those who like the unusual, there are many other spectacular varieties to plant. Browse our extensive bulb collection for ideas.

Bulbs can be layered in containers or in your flower bed, so that the colors just keep popping up. It's best to consider how many layers (or rows) you want to plant. Work from low bulbs in the front of your planting bed (or outside edge of container) and then gradually increase the height towards the back of the bed (or inside of the container).

Three bulbs need to be chilled for 6-8 weeks prior to planting in order to replicate their natural native growing environment; crocus, hyacinth and tulips. Simply place them in a paper bag in the back of your refrigerator (away from apples). Remove them once your holes are dug and you are ready to plant. Drop them into their holes and cover them immediately.

Fragrant lilies, narcissus, freesias and hyacinths should also be planted in mid to late fall. Plant them where your nose as well as your eyes can appreciate their beauty. Container gardens are great because you can keep them off to the side until they are popping with color. Move them to center stage when they are their most dazzling.

More then just fabulous flowers can be planted in the fall. It's prime time for planting garlic bulbs, onion sets and seed potatoes (arriving at the end of the month). Plan ahead so you can enjoy a delicious summer harvest by planting these bulbs in the ground by the end of November.

Don't be disappointed or feel left out when your neighbors have beautiful flower bulbs popping up in their gardens next spring and you have bare ground. Plan and plant ahead! Choose your bulbs now and plant later in the fall (between Halloween and Thanksgiving for a spectacular show in spring. Let the Nursery Pros help you plan your spectacular spring. Follow our FREE planting guides when you want to succeed…the first time.
