Spooky Plants! |
|
|
Looking for something a little different for a cool, spooky Halloween look? Ruben has selected three plants which can be combined in the ground or in containers for the season. The "thriller" in this group is a weird and spooky perennial related to tomatoes and eggplants, Solanum pyracanthum. This spooktacular plant features blue-green leaves with prominent bright orange spines running down its veins. Its stems are covered with orange fuzz and just to top off its show, lavender flowers wave above in clusters. Yikes! It grows 3 to 5 feet tall. It is frost tender and will need some protection during hard frosts, but it's worth it! The "filler" in this group is a thriller in itself, Red Bor Kale. It's not particularly spooky but certainly strange looking. This incredible edible features super frilly, purplish-red foliage. You could also use the Dinosaur Kale with its strange looking foliage. The "spiller" is a new strain of faceless pansy, the Trick or Treat Mix. These "black" and orange pansies put on a show throughout the fall and spring. Try hollowing out small pumpkins for planters and filling them with these cuties.
Ruben works hard to maintain the best selection of edibles and exciting annuals and perennials. Browse Yamagami's bedding section with every visit and find treats of your own! Let our knowledgeable staff help you succeed in making the garden you really want! |
New Arrival: Pagano Seeds from Italy |
Pagano Seeds have just arrived at Yamagami's Nursery in time for fall planting. These seeds are imported from Italy in big beautiful color packets, with growing instructions in English and Italian. Pagano Seeds include varieties less commonly seen here. Find 4 varieties of Endive (escarola): Riccia pancalieri a costa rosata, Bianca di Napoli, Cornetto di Bordeaux, and Ricca Schiana di S. Valentino. Delizioso! There's still time to plant these as well as Pagano's broccoli and onion varieties. For continental flavor, try planting these in your garden now. Exciting varieties for the spring planting include Finocchio, Capers, and several types of Fagiolo (green beans). Yamagami's Nursery is truly your source for incredible edibles! Buon appetito! |

Golden Trumpets Announce Spring! |
|
You know spring is here when daffodils start to appear in gardens and on hillsides. Their warm golden glow is a harbinger of the warmth that is on its welcome way. Daffodils look best in masses and drifts; a solitary daffodil looks lonely. One popular technique is to toss a dozen or more bulbs in the air and plant them where they land for a natural appearing drift. Other ways to mass them include in a corner bed, around trees, along the length of a hedge, and in borders. Daffodils are the perfect bulbs for our area. Gophers won't eat them, deer
don't eat them and they require very little if any maintenance. Let the Nursery Pros at Yamagami's Nursery help you plan a glorious spring in your garden. We recommend planting bulbs between Halloween and Thanksgiving for your best results. However, by then, selection will be slim. So, come in soon, you don't want to miss out! |
