Just Arrived: Olallieberries!

After 5 years, we once again have olallieberries! These large, shiny, firm and juicy black berries are prized for jams and pies. Genetically, olallieberies are approximately two thirds blackberry and one third red raspberry.

While the berries resemble blackberries, they grow on canes that are much less thorny than those of blackberries. They ripen in July. Many olallieberries are used in jams, preserves, and wines because, though the ripening season is short, the harvest is bounteous. Whether fresh or fresh frozen, they are also used to make tasty pies, tarts, and other pastries. As anyone who has gone to a pick-it-yourself farm can tell you, they are incredibly delicious eaten straight from the vine.

Olallieberries, like other cane berries, are a great addition to the edible landscape as they are grown vertically and can be used on existing fences or planted on trellises to be used as garden space dividers. Pick up our FREE Cane Berry guide for pruning information. Let the Nursery Pros at Yamagami's help you succeed with your own garden of eatin'.

New Roses Are on Their Way, Order Yours Today!

Hundreds of new roses are on their way and scheduled to start arriving sometime between mid-December and the beginning of January. Whether you are into exhibition hybrid tea roses or shrub roses used for color in the landscape, Yamagami's will have a rose for you. Early orders are the best way to ensure you get the roses of your choice as we frequently run out of the more popular choices. Award winning roses, new roses and old are all represented in our 2010 collection.

Shrub roses are the hottest roses being hybridized today. The allure of nearly year round color on an easy care plant is pretty irresistible for the low maintenance garden. Shrub roses do not need specialized pruning, they are generally pest-free, and are usually prolific bloomers.

New for 2010 are two outstanding shrub roses. Look for 'Lavender Meidiland,' the newest offering from the famed House of Meidiland. Growing to about 4 feet tall and wide, it offers a profusion of cupped lavender blossoms on a bed of super glossy foliage. 'Limoncello,' another Meidiland beauty, covers itself with bright yellow single blossoms. This vigorous grower reaches about 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide. We offer many other shrub roses and groundcover roses that offer big, big color with little work.

Place your early orders for roses today. Choose roses for your garden and roses for gifts. Yamagami's offers quantity discounts on early orders (pre-paid) of 10% off for 3 or more, 15% off for 5 or more and 20% off for 7 or more. Let Yamagami's Nursery Pros help you choose the perfect roses for your garden and gardening interest.

Gifts for Your Gardening and Non-Gardening Friends!

Maybe you think that Yamagami's has only plants and dirt to offer. You'd be mistaken! Yamagami's Nursery is full of fun gifts, large and small, for all your friends and family--gardeners or not. Here is just a small sampling of gift ideas under $20.

Elephant Poo Stationery:
That's right, it's stationery made from recycled Elephant Poo. The poo itself is collected from elephant conservation parks. It makes an odorless paper with that wonderful handmade texture to it. It's a perfect ecologically sound gift for someone who has everything. You really have to see it and touch it (and sniff it) to appreciate it. We offer Elephant Poo Journals and Note Cards too.

Heritage Illustrated Playing Cards:
Learn while you play! These decks of cards feature detailed illustrations of garden related subjects such as fruits, vegetables, or flowers--as well as a range of other subjects like dinosaurs, dogs, and ocean life. With 52 illustrations in each category, you'll see beautiful images of less familiar members of that category.

Half the fun of playing with them is learning! They are great for children and adults. Pack a deck or two in your car; you never know when they'll come in handy!

Bee Happy Dancing Flower:
These silly little daisies dance in sunlight to bring a smile to your face. Solar powered, they fit perfectly on a window sill and bring color and smiles all day. They are perfect for dorm rooms, for shut-ins, and for those who want color without having to fuss.

Best-1 Hummingbird Feeder:
You can find fancier hummingbird feeders but these have proven themselves to be easy to use, reliable, durable and very attractive to hummingbirds. They are easy to clean and dishwasher safe! They are designed with hummingbirds' safety and ease of feeding as a priority. Feed those hungry hummingbirds using this practical and well-named feeder!

SoapRocks® :
Wash your hands often and treat them to SoapRocks. They are mild, long-lasting and each color has a heavenly natural fragrance. They resemble rock crystals and, as they gently cleanse, they slowly weather away like stones in a stream. SoapRocks® are unique blends of whole herb extracts, vitamins and minerals, containing Aloe, Calendula, Chamomile, Comfrey, Lavender, Vitamin E, Vegetable Glycerin, Chlorophyll, Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Essential Oils, Mineral Earth, Kaolin Clay, and Glycerin Dew™. They contain no animal products and are tested on humans! Rock your sink and your hands with SoapRocks®. They make wonderful gifts for the person who has everything!

Living Christmas trees

Yamagami's offers lots of tree choices for those who would rather have a living tree than a cut tree this holiday season. You'll find trees from 1 foot to 9 feet tall. If you want a tree that will live in a container for years to come, consider the Alberta Spruce or Colorado Blue Spruce. Both are slow growing and can live for years in a container. If you'd like a tree that will be planted after the season, sheared Redwoods and various other evergreens work well. Rosemary and ivy topiaries can be decorated for the season, then used as an ornamental plant the rest of the year.

Here are some tips for care of Living Christmas Trees used indoors:
Living Christmas Trees should be kept indoors for no more than two weeks. Water them well before bringing them in and keep their soil moist during their stay. We suggest using a large saucer with stones under the pot. Keep the water level in the rocks of the saucer below the drainage holes of the pot using a turkey baster.

Indoors, they prefer a sunny, well-lit location. Avoid placing them by a heater, heater vent, or fireplace. Use miniature lights (LED are best) and lightweight ornaments to avoid damage to the limbs.

After Christmas they need to be gradually readjusted to life outdoors. Hose them off after removing the ornaments. Put them in a location with afternoon shade for a couple of weeks before moving them to a sunny location. Keep them well watered especially in the summer. If left in a container, be sure to give it a quarter turn monthly for even growth all around.

Whether living, cut or artificial, choose your perfect Christmas Tree at Yamagami's Nursery this year for a merry and bright holiday!
